[Short Story]
Landrobe landed with more force than he expected.
Thanks to how the time travel aspect of Lucius' code works, sometimes things need to readjust thanks to things like drift and world rotation. Usually, he was ready for this, but thanks to the suddenness, and exhaustion on his part, he simply let himself drop on the floor of his room at Duel Academy-- the Academy of his time.
He took a moment to breathe in, sharper than he'd wanted, before forcing himself up.
It was then that he came face-to-face with a strange, floating black robot, and he recoiled despite himself with a yell.
"Wow, I'm surprised that you can actually be startled."
Landrobe considered making a wisecrack after he calmed himself down at the voice-- about how he must be dreaming or something. But he was too tired from being cornered by so many of those people.
"... what're you doing here, Sumiho?"
Sumiho got up from the chair he was sitting in, as the robot floated over to him. "Not leaving me a chance to go "how are you?" "why do you look so tired?" "are you alright?" or anything, huh?" "Just answer the question. This is my room."
Sumiho looked around in mock surprise, but Landrobe's exhausted look cut it short. "... I'm here because I have to talk to you. I think you should stay here."
Of course. It's one of those conversations. Landrobe flopped back onto the floor. "I'm in no rush to go. But if you mean staying in the future, I'm still not changing my mind. Unless you're here to agree with working with me?" "I'm still not going to do that." "Then I'm saying no." Sumiho let out a heavy sigh at that.
"Listen. I think you can tell already that something's going to happen. I've got an inkling that you already experienced it, really." "Do you mean the guys that were wearing the blue uniforms and using Ancient Gears?" "That's likely part of it, yes." How noncommittal. Landrobe's mouth twitched a bit.
"I don't know if it's really going to get much worse. I handled those guys just fine without any issue. The only problem is that they kept coming, that's all. I'll do better next time."
"Yet you're the one who's come back here entirely exhausted and looking like you'd sooner die than move." Now that was exaggerating. He just needed to rest a moment. That's all. "I'll be fine. I never thought I'd see the day where you got worried about me."
"Well, maybe it feels like things are encroaching enough that I need to start getting worried. It's not just you who's affected by this. I don't hate any of you, and I'd rather not see any of you just pointlessly risk yourselves because you followed my example."
"Then how do you plan on taking responsibility? Cause unless you just agree to work with us to make things better for us, I'm not listening to anything you have to say."
Sumiho fumed slightly. It was always so hard to deal with this. Landrobe-- no, Sanae, it's not like he should care about those nicknames now-- he was always stubborn. Determined to puthimself at risk. He hated that, even if he didn't exactly hate Sanae himself. He took in a deep breath, and then let it out.
"... what if we dueled, then." "What, right now?" "No, but soon. Very soon. If you win, I'll relent and work with you, like you've wanted."
That sounded too good to be true, especially with Sanae's confidence. But he had to ask it. "And what if you win?"
"Then we have to give this up, Sanae. No more time travel. No more putting yourselves at risk. The next time you come back here, that's the end. I know Lucius doesn't plan on coming back, so I can't say anything about them, but-- the other ones. You have to convince them to abandon this."
'Sanae' sounded almost foreign to him at this point. He got so used to calling himself Landrobe, it was almost funny to hear anymore. What Sumiho was asking for though was... a lot. But if he could get him to agree to working with him without messing around more...
"... fine. Once I've recovered, we can duel. And if you win, I promise to not jump back to the past again."
Sumiho felt relief. For once, something actually happened. For once, he might be able to fix this mistake.
"So, are you going to leave me now, or did you intend on caring for me personally?" Then Sumiho's mood soured slightly. He considered leaving just at that moment.
... But he let out a huff, and helped Sanae into bed first, before doing that. He didn't hate him.
But god, did he annoy him.
